Today we skied Montenegro, for the very first time. Balkan culture on snow is wild in the best way.

Think rugged landscapes, nice fresh natural snow, long runs, interesting terrain… but if I’m honest, it was missing a lot too. (But thats another post)
And yet today was epic.

Not because the resort was perfect, but because the vibe was.
There were giggles, singing and dancing while skiing.
 Big confident YES’s to red and even black runs. That feeling where you just know your kids are on fire.
 These days balance out the harder ones. The meltdowns. The tired legs. The “why are we even doing this?” moments that come with being a travelling, skiing and world schooling family.

Don’t let anyone else’s highlight reel make you question whether your family is amazing. They are, see your children, play with them. Let them explore their world and themselves.
 Give yourself grace when life feels busy because it will.

I invite you to pause with this one question:
Do you give more time to your job than your family?

Thriving, confident kids are raised by parents who show up. Who invest time, who make it clear through presence, not words or gifts that their children matter.

And were back !!! After three weeks of not posting…
because we took a break, a mini holiday while on a 5 month world schooling adventure holiday who even knew that was a thing… but I’m here for it! 
Over the Christmas/New Year period, we gave ourselves full permission to step back from regular posting and step in to real life.

Yes it was to be truly present with our children and each other. Space to slow right down, time to focus on our values and vision.

But it was mainly because we spent a very special two weeks reconnecting with Matt and the girls’ Austrian heritage, re kindling family connections, deepening friendships, diving into Austrian mountain life and soaking in the rich history and traditions.

The kind of time that reminds you who you are beyond a job or role.
Social media is a beautiful tool. We love it. Well in truth we had to learn to love it and there is much we don’t love about it.
 But to us being human comes first. Presence comes first. Connection comes first.
In a world chasing likes and validation we share to bring joy, inspire and help other families just like us to take the leap towards there own version of what freedom truly means.

So in 2026 this little family is daring to live life on our own terms building a life rich in love, memories, impact, and real connection.

This was supposed to be our perfect glacier ski reel…

Yesterday our family went to Kaprun to ski our very first glacier on the Kitzsteinhorn.

On paper, it’s iconic. A legendary Austrian glacier rising to 3,203 metres.

In reality? It was -11.5°C at the top, with a wind chill that could freeze you standing still.
It started snowing and we had low visibility, the slopes were covered in man made snow on top of glacier ice hard skiing even for the best of us.
 Before we could even click in and ski we had to take 5 gondolas and travel over 2.5 vertical km of ascent before a single ski run.

By the time we reached the glacier, our girls were cold, hungry, and overwhelmed.

What should have been the perfect highlight reel of a once-in-a-lifetime ski day quietly dissolved.

So the phones went down Matt packed the cameras away. After navigating some
Sticky and hard moments we realised this wasn’t a content moment it was a parenting one.

We slowed everything right down. We warmed hands. We talked through fear. We rebuilt confidence step by step on ice, on a glacier, on very busy European slopes.

And then something incredible happened.
Our six-year-old stepped into leadership without being asked. Our five-year-old remembered she is actually bigger and braver than she gives herself credit for.

By the end of the day we were laughing again as a family. Skiing like pros, we were fully present having the kind of fun that can’t be staged or captured. Because together as a family we can do hard things.

There’s no footage. No proof. No fridge magnet.

But in our hearts once again is the deep knowing that when we drop expectations, stay together, and choose connection over performance, the memories become unshakeable.
And honestly? That’s the kind of life we are here to create.

It might look simple connecting children to where there food is grown and getting
apples fresh from the farm.
Buts it’s lessons are deeper than you may think.

Everyday we talk to our kids about choices and pros and cons, we discuss value and nutrition we talk about our wellness, health and support them with there nervous system and mental health everyday its central to who we are as a family.

Today was a great day for our family we collected our organic milk poured fresh from a stainless-steel vat. Free-range eggs out of a vending machine and raw honey still carrying the scent of alpine flowers. All from an apple farm who also supports other famers as a central collection point.

We are in Lienz, where the Dolomites meet the Austrian Alps where farming still means care for the earth, tradition and quality, some farms have been held by the same families for hundreds of years. The land they work isn’t exploited it’s honoured.
The mountains aren’t backdrops they’re living systems that require care, restraint, and deep listening.

Our children didn’t JUST learn maths or spelling today. They learned something deeper.
That nourishment begins long before a plate, that ethics live in everyday choices. That sustainability is cultural and emotional, not just environmental. That respect for farmers and nature is respect for ourselves.

This is life schooling.
Learning how to be human not just a consumer.
 Learning to pause instead of absorbing whatever is loudest or easiest. Learning to choose with heart, wisdom, and responsibility.

In a world designed to keep us disconnected from food, from each other, from creating impact and legacy moments like this is what we live for.

Life schooling teaches our children that they are participants, not passengers. That their choices matter. That diversity, culture, and tradition deserve protection.
 That living well means living in relationship with land, with people, and with themselves.

Today we did a thing we don’t normally do.
And we did it very intentionally.

Since Kotor, Montenegro, we’ve been seeing kremšnita the famous cream cake everywhere. Everyone claims theirs is “the best.” 🤭

A little research and we learnt that the Kremšnita has a special connection to Lake Bled so we decided when we arrived in Bled thats where we would savour this myth.

Kremšnita became iconic in Bled in the 1950s, when it was perfected and became apart of Slovenia’s cultural fabric, not just a tourist trend.

So on a wet, misty, cold morning, we shared a slice. Under the shadow of Bled Castle it was delicious and it felt right.

But this isn’t our normal way to travel.

We don’t usually seek out the tourist hot spots.
We’re far more at home in local cafés, wandering grocery stores, lingering in markets, and becoming part of the everyday rhythm of a place.

And if we’re being deeply honest the inflated prices and diluted value often feel exploitative on both sides, and it gives us the ick when travelling.

So yes such things fun to do now and then, intentionally.

But tomorrow? You’ll find us three streets back… at the pekara coffee in a little cafe.

Right now, as we’re travelling Europe in winter with our kids, we’re discovering a quieter, colder, richer and more honest version of this place and we want to share what’s actually working for us, so it can support other families considering winter travel too.

Here are our top finds and tips so far
✨ The great: Fewer people. This alone has changed everything. Hiking trails are peaceful. Old towns feel lived in, not performed. Lakes, ruins and forests offer space to breathe. As parents, this calm helps us regulate, stay present, and show up more balanced for our children.
✨ The good: Winter makes Europe far more affordable than expected for families. Most UNESCO sites, museums and landmarks are still open often with discounted entry. Kids under 6 are usually free, 6–14 often half price, and staff have more time, patience and generosity.
✨ The in-between: Parking is easier… but it can quietly drain a slow-travel budget. Our solution? Park once, walk everywhere, stay just outside historic centres, and watch for winter free-parking zones.
✨ The hard: Winter travel asks for planning. We prioritise accommodation with kitchenettes, shop local markets, cook simply, and eat out intentionally once we’ve settled in and checked the vibe. This alone protects the budget and avoids disappointment.
✨ The unexpected gift: Without crowds, people see you not as tourists, but as fellow humans. Conversations with locals have opened our eyes to the pressures of mass tourism and reminded us why travelling lightly and consciously matters.
 It isn’t always easy especially with kids. But if you’re craving slower days, deeper connection, meaningful learning and a gentler way to experience Europe… this season might surprise you.

After one full month in Montenegro we can confidently say… we’ve found the BEST burek in the entire country.

Yes, this is a bold claim and Yes, we’re willing to defend in our little humble corner of the internet.

But first what even is a burek?
Think of it as the Balkans’ answer to a pasty, samosa, or meat pie… except better. Way better.

Burek or borek is a deeply loved, everyday food across the Balkans — found in bakeries, villages, cities and roadside stops.

It’s humble, filling, affordable, and wildly regional.

Every town thinks their burek is the best… and honestly, they might be right.

For us a great burek comes down to a few things… • Ultra-thin, flaky layers of pastry • Crispy on the outside but never greasy • Soft, rich and flavour-packed on the inside • And most importantly… the filling
The most common fillings we found while in Albania and Montenegro were Potato, Cheese, Cheese & spinach

But our absolute favourite and a Montenegrin speciality  buckwheat pastry with beef !! Nutty, hearty, peppery grounding, and unreal after a long day of exploring.

It will be the greatest investment you will ever make and the cost of not doing bold things will haunt you more than any budget ever could.
 Flights, food, accommodation… yes, it all adds up. But so does staying in the same place, in the same routine, wondering why life feels so tight, so small, so uninspiring. The price of regret is far more expensive than a plane ticket.

Melt downs will happen. Things will be hard. You will get frustrated, and you will feel like you’re failing at parenting some days. Ouch… but it’s true.
 There will be tears (yours and theirs). There will be overstimulation, missed naps, exhaustion, and moments you want to teleport home. But this is also where resilience is born in motion, in discomfort, in trying again.

You will get overwhelmed…you will be out of your depth and you will grow faster than you ever imagined.
 Travel will show you your shortcomings and ignite your fire at the exact same time. It will stretch you, soften you, awaken you, and break parts of you that were already cracking.
 And then it will rebuild you into a parent, partner, family and human you barely recognise in the best way.

You will never be the same again. And that’s the point.

Because travel with kids isn’t just about seeing the world. It’s about expanding into the version of yourself who trusts life enough to actually LIVE it.

We don’t homeschool because we don’t respect teachers… We homeschool because we respect our kids.

The truth is… we have deep respect for so many teachers. Their commitment, passion and creativity.
 I admire teachers ability to show up day after day with heart even when the system they’re working in gives them so little in return.

Here is what i also see... The lack of autonomy, ablity to create change i see and talk to more teachers worn tired by layers of bureaucracy then those inspired and being fullfilled. 
Many depleted, overworked, unresourced and living in survial.
These are NOT healthy conditions for children to learn in, this is not healthy rolemodling. This is not an envrioment of growth.
 Added to this distressing state of the education work force is we simply don’t believe in the current system of schooling.

Not for our children, and not for the children of this generation or the future.

So, to all the teachers out there bringing your magic into the classroom… We see you. We honour you. We know you’re doing incredible work inside a system that doesn’t always support you.

And to all the parents who feel that tug in your chest. The knowing that your child’s nervous system, emotional development, and natural rhythm need more than convenience or conformity…
 I see you too. I am you. Choosing a different path doesn’t make you extreme, irresponsible or “against” anything.
 It simply means you’re willing to honour what your heart tells you and the strenght to give your child what they truly need even when it looks different to what everyone else is doing.

What does a travelling family do when it’s raining… AGAIN? 
Well first we sigh and hope it falling as snow further north which is our next destination.
Then we get real with our mindset and borrow a little Nordic wisdom: 
There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

And honestly… same goes for life, once you start to rewire the brain to see opportunities in obstacles and even bad weather doesn’t feel as bad as it used too a new found strength and resilience shapes your days.
 So dress mentally for the season you’re in.  Because you’re way more waterproof than you think.
And while you’re at it don’t just dip your toe into your passions… Dive right in. 
no one ever gets the results there dream about without diving right in.

It might be further than you think.  We hiked the incredible Kotor Ladder an ancient zig-zag stone pathway carved into the dramatic mountains rising behind Kotor Old Town.

Once used as a major trading route between coastal Montenegro and inland communities, the “Ladder of Kotor” climbs steeply and offers views that genuinely feel like stepping into another century.

We set off at 8:30am, completely convinced we’d be home by lunch. Our supplies for the day? Some water and 2 pieces of fruit each. 🫣
 But the mountain had other plans.  The return journey took 6 hours!
6hrs of walking with our 5 & 6yr old daughters climbing, slipping, laughing, stopping, negotiating, observing, encouraging… and witnessing our girls refine the skills that life schooling gifts them.
 Personal resilience, emotional awareness, listening to their bodies & A “I can do hard things” life philosophy.

Let’s be fair and honest on this 18km walk there were moments their little legs wobbled.
 Moments where support, not toxic positivity, was the only thing they needed.
And that’s what we offered to lend them our strength in hugs, holding hands and at times piggy backs.
Hearing them, acknowledging the hard of it but showing them the way to their own strength and abilities without comparing without dismissing or over riding there experience.

As a family, we conquered the Kotor Ladder one switchback at a time. ALL 77 of them ! We sat at the top, looking over the bay, and something in me softened and expanded at once…

A deep wave of gratitude washed over me  for my children, for my husband, for our health, for the life we choose to live, and for the strength we share when we move as a team.
I’m so proud of our girls. I’m proud of us. And I’m reminded again that sometimes the longest paths deliver the clearest perspective.

Hiking 18km was totally worth is and achievable with kids my advice pack more supplies and snacks and do the walks, hike the trails and show your kids what they are capable and remind yourself how capable you are too.

Most people don’t realise this simple yet overlooked thing but how you book your accommodation can make or break your travel budget.

Confession time…
 We realised on this trip that every single time we leave our accommodation morning, night, hungry, exploring, we always turn LEFT.
Every SINGLE Time.

It’s become such a thing that on day five of this trip we just burst out laughing.
And now its something we notice in ourselves.
 Like… how have we got through life this far somehow still behave like a GPS stuck on one setting?

It’s become an inner family joke that even the kids will giggle about and use when we are heading off on an adventure.

So today we decided, purely for the fun of it and maybe a tiny bit out of shame that we favoured LEFT a little too easily, to turn RIGHT instead.

We packed our water bottles, a few snacks and just started walking no goal, no expectations, no idea what was down that way.
 Not even a quick “best bakery near me” search, which honestly felt like the biggest leap of faith of all.

And you know what? It was actually a lovely day, nothing spectacular but it did offer new view points and definitely opened an awareness in us that we really are here for the growth and the challenges no matter the size.

There was something strangely refreshing about not knowing where we were going and just letting the day unfold. AND yes, we went RIGHT completely unprepared and had to walk back km’s in the rain and it wasn’t some big spiritual moment. No epiphany.
 Just a simple, funny reminder that even when you’re living this big, adventurous, world schooling life… you can still fall into tiny routines without noticing.

And sometimes all it takes to shake things up is to literally turn the other way.
We can all get a little stuck in our ways, too comfortable and that’s okay, it’s human.
What matters is how we shake ourselves out of a funk and step up do make the choices and actions that align with our dreams that count.

Today we went swimming in the rain. It was 14°C. It was windy. It was cold. It was absolutely not the sensible thing to do…
But our kids thought it was the perfect day to swim and honestly, who am I to tell them otherwise?

We don’t realise how many of our limitations, fears, and “that’s not what we do” beliefs come from the way we were raised.
 Generations of “no”, “be careful”, “not today”, “that’s silly”, “that won’t work”.

But here’s the real truth… Our kids won’t remember the reasons we said no but they will remember the feeling of No.
 But a YES, they will grow from every single YES.

2️⃣ Hands-on activities Colouring, UNO, mini puzzles — anything tactile helps regulate little nervous systems at 40,000ft.

3️⃣ Unscented wipes + mini “freshen up” routine Washing faces, moisturising, brushing teeth = instant mood reset.

4️⃣ A comfort teddy Snuggly, grounding, familiar — especially during take-off/landing or overstimulating moments.

5️⃣ Keep them warm Layers, cosy socks + a little blanket meant they actually slept (hallelujah).

1 Week in Athens — What We Did, Saw & Learned

Our week in Athens has been full of history, culture, flavour and deep learning.

Athens is one of those cities that hits every sense at once ancient and modern woven together in a way you can only feel when you’re walking its streets.
Here is a summary of our week what we loved and what we didn’t.

What We Loved and recommend
* Panoramic city views from Philopappos Hill and Lycabettus Hill, do the walk save the euros, our daughters 5 & 6 powered up the hill, the cable car is a tourist trap.
* Exploring the Acropolis + Parthenon add on the Acropolis Museum, perfect for curious kids
* Wandering local neighbourhoods like Plaka, Anafiotika, Koukaki, and the backstreets where real life happens
* Street markets, little squares, parks and hidden alleys.
* Simple, delicious €6 lunches + daily gelato stops.
* Getting out to the Islands are a must.

We came during autumn which is the off-season, and honestly, it was perfect:
Warm but not hot, no one got flustered when slightly lost it was very comfortable walking weather and the best part far fewer tourists making it easier to explore at a slow, child led pace.

Do we think Athens Good for Worldschooling?
In Short Yes, absolutely. Athens is incredibly world schooling friendly because of its hands on history, walkability, safe, accessible public transport warm and helpful people.

We watched our kids learn here simply by being present touching ruins, watching city life, tasting new food and absorbing culture.

However… for us, 1 or 2 weeks is enough in Athens. The air quality and pollution mean it’s not on our list of long-term, liveable world schooling cities. Brilliant for learning, not ideal for staying months.

Today we had a loose plan starting our morning by heading to Syntagma Square, where we witnessed the Changing of the Guard at the Hellenic Parliament.

The guards, known as the Evzones, stand watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier a monument honoring those who gave their lives for Greece’s freedom.

Every hour they perform this precise, almost meditative ritual in total stillness, every movement slow and symbolic.

Their traditional uniform the white fustanella with 400 pleats represents the 400 years of Ottoman occupation, a powerful reminder of resilience and sovereignty.

What we didn’t expect was the feeling in the air. The energy was still, the crowd quiet.
 There was a deeply sober mood, a shared reverence that words can’t quite capture.

You could feel the weight of history in your chest and the kids felt it too.

This moment captured exactly what our vision of learning is.
It not about facts or memorizing dates.
 It was about being there, absorbing the atmosphere, witnessing honor and discipline in motion.
 That presence turned into such a beautiful conversation about: Sovereignty …what it truly means for a nation and for ourselves. People power …how collective courage shapes freedom. Selflessness …serving something greater than comfort or gain. Big vision …the kind that inspires generations to come.

We don’t homeschool
we life school.
 We are un-schooling our minds, our routines, and the way we see the world.

When we first started this journey, even the word homeschool didn’t feel right.
 Something in us wanted more freedom, more flow, and more trust in life itself as the teacher.

We began questioning everything we’d been told about schooling, success, and what learning should look like.
 What stood out most was how much the system rewards compliance over curiosity.

So, we started doing the opposite. We began creating a space where curiosity could live.

And along the way, we found ourselves
un-schooling too.
 Undoing layers of conditioning.
 Getting curious again about life, work, wellness, and what it really means to live in alignment.

We’ve changed how we earn income, how we see the world, and how we take care of ourselves.
 Because learning doesn’t just happen at a desk it happens everywhere.
 In nature, in conversations, in cooking, in travel, in laughter, and in the joy of everyday discovery.

So we don’t homeschool. We life school. We trust life to teach.

We did a thing I thought I’d never do… we jumped on a tourist bus to travel to the Greek Riviera!

When travelling with kids, I’ve learned it’s important to consider their needs first and sitting up high, exploring from a double-decker bus, turned out to be not only fun but also a great way to rest little legs while still seeing the sights.

With it being autumn, the days are still beautifully warm in the direct sun but cool in the shade and during the mornings and afternoons the perfect balance.

It made wandering and exploring so enjoyable, with no one getting too hot or flustered.

And honestly? The lack of crowds made the whole experience even better. The tourist bus felt easy, relaxing, and surprisingly informative.

We spent time walking along the waterfront, chatting, meeting sweet street cats, watching locals swim, and soaking up the coastal energy.

Tomorrow, we’re hopping back on the bus to explore Athens city and the historic sights

Day 1 of any adventure after long-haul flights, long layovers, and a delay thrown in for fun comes with zero expectations.

We’re not just travelling we’re living in other countries. Exploring. Immersing.
 Slowing down to a more present pace.
So naturally, we left our Airbnb with no plans just curiosity.

We discovered that the public transport in Athens is not only efficient, easy, and affordable, but kids under 7 ride free a total win for families.

If you’re travelling through Athens, grab the multi-trip 24-hour ticket it makes getting around the city effortless.

We wandered through the meat, fish, and produce markets (established in the 1800s). It was an explosion for the senses the noise, the smells, the colours and gave us so much to talk about.

Lunch in an old square. Meandering through cobblestone streets. Stumbling across ancient ruins without even meaning to.

Day 1 was incredible we’ve slipped into flow already and feel so safe and comfortable here.

We walked to the top of Philopappos Hill, taking in views across to the Acropolis and down to the coast soaking in the city, the history, and the energy of it all.

And I have to say the people of Athens so far have been either beautifully kind, warm, and helpful, or completely indifferent just city people going about their day.
 And somehow, I love that contrast.
It feels real. Honest. Human.

We figured you can’t teach perspective from a classroom so we packed our bags instead.

27hrs of travel later and we have arrived in Greece.

I’ve watched our kids over the past 27hrs and their world has rapidly expanded and watching them navigate and open up to the diversity of humanity makes the exhaustion worth it.
 We’ve been told by friends (and even a Greek taxi driver) that we’re crazy but we’ll take crazy and connected over comfortable and confined any day.

We left behind the “safe” Aussie lifestyle to raise kids who are grounded, grateful, curious, and culturally aware.
 After years of dreaming and months of planning, we’ve finally landed in Athens.

Day 1 was a blur of winding streets, new smells, laughter, and jet lag, no plan, no pressure, just presence.
 Tired? Absolutely. But more alive than ever. 🇬🇷✨

WOW…What a month.

July has been a swirl of snow, ski boots and fresh lines cold noses and warm hearts.

It’s been a month of living deeply, on the mountain cut off by road from the nearest town over an hour away.

Where the days have a mountain time rhythm, our time is split between managing the lodge we are staying at for the winter and spending as much time as a family as well can.
 It’s a dream come true raising our kids in rhythm with nature, not with a schedule.
Without the distractions of shops, rushing or driving from here to there everyday.
 We choose to swapping school bells and screens for snowballs and passion.

There’s something powerful that happens when you strip life back to what matters most: Time together Nature as the classroom, not just for the kids. Presence over perfection Conversations instead of TV Connection over consumption

We didn’t just come to the snow for adventure—we came to live on our terms.
To set the tone for our lives, laugh and cry through the bumps. To build memories, not routines. To make money in ways that don’t cost us our time, values, or connection.
 To show our kids that freedom is possible—and joy isn’t found in more stuff, but in shared moments.

This month, we’ve laughed, learned, fallen, gotten back up (on skis and in life). 
We’ve had off days, beautiful ones, and everything in between. There has been melt downs and personal bests. But more than anything—we’ve been awake, together, and free.

And if you ask me? That’s success.
